How about doing a wash with HCl on the foil before adding the mercury nitrate? Wouldn't that remove any oxide layers stopping the reaction?

Can this be used to substitute syntheses requiring NaBH4? I am trying to make 5-MeO-DMT from 5-MeO-T following Hamilton Norris's synthesis, but I don't have NaBH4 available to me.

Why doesn't Al/Hg work for that synthesis? it should reduce the imine to methylate the tryptamine, no?

The one thing I'm not too sure about is the product, will it make MMT or DMT. In your synthesis of methamphetamine from amphetamine with Al/Hg, only one methyl group is added to the amine.

After preparing solution of mercury in nitric acid, then adding this solution to a flask with water and aluminum foil, how does one properly vent the fumes from this reaction? The fumes seem strong enough that it is escaping from the air filter and going through the mask as well. I was thinking of using the vacuum pump with the flask then a vacuum regulator so the vacuum strength is just enough for the fumes to be vented outside, but concerned about pumping hydrogen gas as it might risk explosion
