What where the easiest ways to get hand on methylamine and 2B4m?

Any chance to produce this in Europe with other ingredients which are easy available?

Would love to finally produce my first batch....

At the moment my budget and the availably of some substances are pretty rare, so maybe someone has a good tip to get this finally running at a low cost!

Green!!

Hey 👋 I'll give a small update.

maybe someone else is in the same situation like me, so that whole thread could be maybe helpful.

After researching for the ingredients for my first 4mmc synthesis will be the one with ethyl acetate, because I want to buy as much legal substances as possible and also keep it simple.

The last step before I start will be the 2B4m and the methylamine, I'll buy definitely here.

But for now my next step is buying the necessary lab equipment.
I don't want to waist money on expensive and maybe unnecessary needs for my small scale "science experiments".

Of course I looked up the needed equipment for the 4mmc production, but because my plan in the next few years is also trying to synthesize other substances as well, I thought maybe I should get equipment which potentially is also used in the production of other substances as well.

Specifically now I'm not sure if I should get a heated magnetic stirrer, regarding for future projects.

If money wouldn't be a problem, of course I would get the best and highend stuff on the market.

1. Magnetic stirrer;
2. Beaker 200ml (can be any volume) and 1000 ml (wide);
3. Flask;
4. Scale;
5. Mechanical stirrer (can use cordless drill);
6. thermometer;
7. Dish for water bath;
8. Separation funnel;
9. Buchner funnel;
10. Vacuum pump;

My question is should I get a heated magnetic stirrer regarding for future projects?

What thermometer should I get? Is a laser thermometer ok? I already own one for dabbing

If u get a more detailed instruction on this or any other tips for useful equipment or substances please let me know!!

I was in your situation few months ago. Based on my experience, a magnetic stirrer is an absolute deal breaker and you should totally get one right at the start if you can afford it. Being able to maintain precise temperature while stirring the reaction mixture vigorously has been the most important capability that I've learned across my several batches. Vevor SH-3 is great, SH-2 will work too. Either can be ordered from Vevor or through AliExpress for less than $100. One stir bar comes with the hot plate, get one more (perhaps a larger one) and you're all set.

You don't need a flask, you can perform the synthesis in a beaker. You don't need a sep funnel, a plastic bottle with a squirt cap does the same job for $1 cost. You don't need a Buchner funnel, a $1 plastic funnel lined with a coffee filter will get the job done. You do not need a vacuum pump until you scale up and cook commercially. All of these are optional and make your life easier. However, you do need a mag stir hot plate.

A 0.01 g scale is $5 (AliExpress), don't waste money on something fancy that won't perform any better. A very decent digital thermometer is $20. Mine has two probes that work from -10 °C to 300 °C and is marketed for barbecue. I plan to get a laser thermometer to be able to take temperature readings of hot acid but you don't need one unless you plan to do the same (distill sulfuric acid). For the purposes of synthesis any glass/digital thermometer will work. I prefer a digital one since the probe is stainless steel that can't be damaged, the temperature is easy to read and I can set alarms for any temperature. You can definitely start with a laser one that you already own and see how it works for you.

I've been a huge fan of "Vevor distillation kit 32 pcs" (again, AliExpress or Vevor store). I don't own one yet but I plan to get one next month. You won't find a better deal on lab glassware anywhere on the Internet. RBFs, a sep fun, condensers, adapters, tubing, clamps, stoppers, everything in one neat kit for about $120. You'll need some (cork) stands for RBFs, a lab stand/support kit, some grease/PTFE tape for joints, a simple water pump to run the cooling circuit and you'll be ready to recover solvents through distillation, purify reagents, etc.

Thx a lot for your help!

So I'm at the moment between a before heating Mantel 1000ml with magnetic stirrer or a heat plate with magnetic stirrer which is a little bit cheaper (around 60€ on Amazon)
But I'm not sure which one fits better or if there was s any difference?

At least all the synthesis kits from vevor come with those heating mantel stirrer.

Fortunately I already got some equipment from further experiments.

I already got:
Vacuum chamber+pump
A few flasks
Buchner funnel
Thermometer Gun (not sure if that will work or if I need one to insert into liquid?)
Scale 0,001g

After getting the heater I'll get the vevor kit 32 pieces from Amazon too.

Then after buying the 2 chemicals here on the marketplace l, as far I understood I'm ready to synthesize!

It took me a while to make a decision between a heating mantle for RBFs and a hot plate (mag stir mandatory for either). In the end I got a hot plate (SH-3) and I stand by that decision. I can heat any beaker/flat flask directly, or any RBF (regardless of its size) using a sand bath. A hot plate is more versatile than a heating mantle.

Vevor has several kits, the one I shill for is named "distillation kit 32 pcs". It contains only glassware, rubber tubing and plastic clamps - no heater and no stirrer.

Yeah you'll need the typical precursor and reagent (2b4m and methylamine), but you'll also need distilled/demineralized water, acetone and solvent (ethyl acetate or DCM are most popular, cheapest and easy to obtain). Oh, and hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), or, if you feel fancy, a HCl gas generator made probably using concentrated sulfuric acid react with kitchen salt.

Beside the price the heat plate seems better because it's not only possible to heat and stirr one size at once. On the other hand I need flat beaker/flasks which are not part of the vevor set, so money whise there is no difference in buying the mantel or the cheaper plate plus extra flasks.

A sand bath is a really good idea to get the problem fixed by heating only the bottom. Does the magnetic stirrer then still works?

If I look up the prices on AliExpress and amazon .

I could get a heating plate for around 70€ on Amazon and on AliExpress for 60€ from vevor.
The mantel would cost between 90 o€n Amazon and around 80€ on AliExpress.
So there is no big difference in my opinion.

I think I will go with the vevor kit plus 2 lab stands from Amazon for around 140€ all together.
AliExpress is not really cheaper with those 2 products.

Beside the 2B4m and the methylamine I already got all the ingredients.

So I will be able to start very soon!

Beakers are kind of essential and multi-purpose, flat flasks I am not so sure. Depends on what you plan to do. My approach is to keep it small and simple, do not get single-purpose glassware unless it's going to be used frequently or has a specific role that can't be served by other pieces of glassware. With that said, I am not getting any flat bottom flasks at all.

I've just got the sand (courtesy local kids' playground) but haven't used it yet. However, I see no reason why a mag stir would not work through sand as long as the outer vessel is non-magnetic. Use a glass/porcelain dish to contain the sand and it should all work fine.

AliExpress allows me to pick the exact country that the product ships from. That way I've been able to make previous purchases knowing they will not go through any customs whatsoever. I don't like to let the customs get any stupid ideas based on my purchase history and a kit like this stands out under X-ray like it is heading to Heisenberg himself. I don't mind to spend few extra bucks to avoid that.

Good luck with your endeavors and I hope to see some success stories from you later!

That's the reason I prefer to buy from Amazon or eBay, at least within the EU.

Because I've read about ppl got busted because the ordered lab equipment from china as well as some chemicals.
