I was reading about Chloral Hydrate and it’s sedative properties. It seems to be a pretty simple molecule. I’m hoping the process and reagents aren’t too advanced as I’d like to start simple when doing my first synthesis ever. If not can someone recommend a chem that’s relatively easy to make? (Excluding meth) been there, done that, done the time.

It is obtained by chlorination of ethanol in an acidic solution; at the first stage, trichloroacetic aldehyde (chloral) is formed. Chloral is then hydrolyzed to form chloral hydrate.

Also, there's a description of it here on the forum. Basically, you bubble chlorine gas through 100% etanol on ice. Easy-peasy. Almost as easy as ... I don't know, using google?
