I am unable to purchase acetone and toluene in my country, which is why I am considering making chloroform as an alternative non-polar solvent. Chloroform is typically made using acetone, but since I don't have access to acetone, I am wondering if I can use ethanol and calcium hypochlorite instead. Can ethanol and calcium hypochlorite be used to produce chloroform?

It’s called the haloform reaction and YouTube is a reliable source. The only danger is the strong exothermic effect which limits things to a small scale. So try in manageable batch you don’t want to get where control over heat is lost.
