I've been having some trouble with a gas generator, i tried to google it up but didnt find anything that'd come in handy, so i'm asking you guys to help to assemble an HCI gas generator.

2 jugs 2 lids 2 hoses. 2 holes in one lid, 1 hole in the other. 2 hoses mounted shallowly in the 2 hole lid. Hose to the bottom of single hole lid. Salt in th bottle with 2 hole lid. H²SO⁴ in the single hole lid bottle. The hose end that is loose goes in your reaction mixture. Squeeze the sulphuric acid bottle, acid runs through the hose to the salt. Hcl gas is evolved and goes out the other tube and into reaction mixture. When it quits smoking squeeze some more acid into the salt

Given that H2SO4 hasnt been widely available anymore since the EU ban, its hardly a very OTC method .. Drop conc HCl (>30%) on CaCl2 and apply heat. This will generate HCl. 1kg of 30% HCl + 1kg of granular CaCl2 anhydr will generate about 150g HCl gas. Yields not as good as with H2SO4 (~40% vs 80%), but CaCl2 is easy to come by and in difference to H2SO4 it can easily be regenerated after the process. Just put it in the stove at 200ish °C for a couple hours and its good for the next run. So buy 50kg of this once and never rebuy.. all you gotta rebuy then is cheap HCl from the hardware store.

It's been a while since I write that up there. There's a small issue with it and that is you're not drying the gas, so you'll be putting a little water in you RM. Now a days I assemble my glassware kit to do it and the last piece is a cold trap with sulfuric acid in it that dries the gas. Sulfuric acid is readily available in the states but in the EU it's also readily available in old car batteries. You'll have to clean it up a little but sometimes you just need what you need so you have to think outside the box.

Thats why I posted a better alternative for EU. Certainly having to pick up double the amount of HCl (which is available in hardware stores for cheap anyway) trumps milking some old car batteries. Not to mention, NEW car batteries have around 40% conc H2SO4, in old car batteries this value will be even lower. So not only will the production and salvaging of these car batteries be highly laborious, it will get a lot worse once you realize that you have to process this H2SO4 as well to get it to high purity. Fractional distillation will only get you so far with this before the sulphuric acid goes azeotropic with the residual water .. around 70ish % without supplemental efforts. But for the HCl generator, this is not concentrated enough.

So unless you still have access to H2SO4 freely in Europe, a HCl/CaCl2 generator is definitely the better option this side of the pond.
