How does methylamine hydrochloride become methylamine?

You add basic solution to it slowly, under an ice bath, this is for it not to evaporate so easy,

There is no videos on it anywhere, there is no straight forward documentation anywhere on this. A guide or video to make a 40% aqueous solution does not exist, it is always missing a step or two which can lead the whole thing to a catastrophe.

Always ambiguous information like "basic solution" which I have come to gather is a 1:5 ratio of sodium hydroxide and water.

My guess is that it is such a simple process in chemistry that no need for a much greater explanation. But nobody seems to want to explain more. Seems fishy, pun intended.

thats simply bc its just freebasing any one should be able to do that u dont need a guide for it and if u cant do stoichiometry then u should search for another hobby. besides what catastrophe can happen there ????
this whole tread is making me smash my head aggainst a wall.

So 120ml of water + 80 grams of methylamine hcl = 200 ml 40% is my understanding 200/80 = 40% But there is a lot of waste and so you have to do more than 80 grams. Personally never have done it, but it also seems like not many people know.

This is a very good question. My guess would be that 40% refers to the salt, so 40g of Methylamine HCl dissolved in enough water to make the final solution 100ml? Then during the synthesis routes there is always concentrated NaOH added so in the reaction MeAmine will react as freebase. I`m nowhere near an expert and some expert input would be appreciated.

Yeah or you generate in situ if it's convenient.


You don't need a video to tell you to add NaOH sol. until no more methylamine evolves, it is obvious to the eye.It is known in chemistry that the acid salts of an amine can be convered back into freebase form by addition of a base as a counter ion to the Cl- SO4- ion, I hope they way I said it is correct, but you get the gist.Lysine and sodium bicarbonate may also liberate some amine acid salts to base.

Just saying there isn't a video or clear explanation of it anywhere, even if it is such a simple process.

When you say "obvious to the eye" I am unsure what that means. Because say you fill a flask up with 100ml and 80g methylamine hcl solution, the dripper with 100ml and 20g lye solution. Then a bubbler up with 120ml very cold water. You start dripping lye into the salt solution very slowly, there is no way with a naked eye you'll ever get to 200ml (absorbing 40%) or even know if you hit that spot.

Here, watch this, gasses are evolved, including hydrogen and your freebase amine.When adding aq NaOh sol. your mixture will also react somewhat violently at first, aswell as the fact that some hydrochloride will crash out and eventually dissolve, hope this helps.

mate u do realise that the reaktion between NaOH and HCl is NaOH + HCl ---> NaCl + H2O so where does the hydrogen come from?

Wow y'alls minds are running wild over here. You really need to produce the gas and catch it bubbling through clean water. The way you know when it is 40% is by weighing the water. When a liter of water weighs 1666.6g you now have an unknown amount of 40% CH³NH⅔ solution in water. The volume of water is not constant. The amount you have is what you have but for a liter you'll need to catch 12 moles, so make 13-14
