Question Dehydrogenation of 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) to gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) HELP!!

Hello everyone,

I have a question for the experts i have a copper chromite catalyst and BDO.
But everything I read about this synthesis is you always need to purify the BDO before you use it to convert to gamma-butyrolacton and you need to purify the GBL afterwars because it containes some unreacted BDO...
Does anybody how i can do this what kind of distillation do i need to have pure BDO?

Distil the BDO to remove heavy metals and dissolved minerals left by the manufacturing process. After the conversion, filter and then distil again to ensure all the catalyst is removed. You should get an over 90% conversion with copper chromite. BDO is a prodrug and catabolized down to the same metabolites as GBL/GHB after one pass of the liver. So no real reason to go through the trouble to purify unreacted BDO if you follow the conversion to completion.
